Mapling Is Community Building

Writer: Sarah BrennerSarah Brenner

Tapping maple trees, collecting sap and cooking it down is magical in communities where these resources are available. What a natural form of community it conjures...

Stetson, three years old, hard at work helping the big boys.

In the city, where work life takes so much energy, gatherings with friends tend around leisure and play. Out here on the farm, my heart fills as I watch neighbors not just gather, but flock to our work. Maple syruping is such an awe-inspiring project, that visitors are happy to participate. A long brutal and dark winter brings the human spirit to life as the days lengthen, the sun warms and our bodies crave to again be outside connecting to nature…and each other.

I wonder, if I were to again choose city living, how could I create natural pathways to gathering and community building around work instead of leisure? What are your thoughts?

Sending love from the farm,

Sarah

How could I and a friend experience this at your farm?

It's tricky because mapling is not a thing we can schedule. Sometimes the trees run, sometimes they don't. But, the cooker is down the driveway from the Farm Store, so if you stop by, look to see if anyone is there. The other tricky part is that this time of year when the frost heaves out of the ground, it is MUDDY out in the sugar bush. We haven't had much sap yet..we're hoping the cooler temps next week will bring a flow...although it's possible that we'll be active sooner. Feel free to reach out (contact is on our website) to ask what's happening if you're hoping to plan a visit.
